Hello David, I am glad you promote Balinese culture in many ways.
As an Asian myself, I have eaten rice . There is an ancient book based on the Indian Upanishad series of spritual discourse
In one series called the Chandogya Upanishad, it is recorded how the persons follows a rebirth cycle when his soul leaves the physical body upon death.
The process of becoming a foetus or a potential human being and re-entering the womb of a person is actually described as the steps of the souls (atma) energy + mind waves including his heart good / bad intentions firstly leaving the body for 7 days and subsequently based on the timing of full moon cycle of 28 days the potential human being follows the moon ( which is also a water cylce of high tide/low tide water cycle goes through the cloud and enter the earth as rain . If the persons quality are human value predominance he would be attached to the grains crops when it dna is deposited to the ground suitable for rice growing.
Those human entities who eat these grains convert them into blood and sperms and through human male/female union relation becomes a new born baby. so the birth of human body is associated with Earth and Water cycle which the balinese and Indian text story is using their own terminology. I am using modern language to link mysticism to scientific facts if there is any at all.
So, the earth and water link to rice grain as staple has a reasonable scientfic truth to why grain are for humans, grass is for cows, bushes is for goat etc..flesh eating is for lust ful beings..Bali is suitable place for peace loving entities generally.
